What we did
The Global-Rural project has been looking at how Newtown is connected into the global woollen industry. Our data collection has involved identifying and tracing relations and connections within the wool industry outwards from the starting point of Newtown and, more specifically, from a particular flock of Texel sheep on one Welsh farm...
This involved field visits to the sheep farm in question just outside of Newtown, as well as to the British Wool Marketing Board’s (BWMB) grading depot in Newtown (below left), the BWMB headquarters and auction rooms in Bradford (below right) and a wool scouring and combing facility, Haworth Scouring, also in Bradford. We conducted interviews with farmers, BWMB staff and commercial wool merchants. This primary data collection was supplemented by information gathered from wool industry reports, publications and trade data.
