What We Did
The Global-Rural project has been looking at the trading connections of Newtown. We have conducted a survey of businesses on the various industrial estates in the town, and followed these up with a number of more indepth interviews.
Whilst by no means comprehensive the survey of 48 businesses across three of the town’s industrial estates (Mochdre, Vastre and Dyffryn) provided us with some initial insights with all bar one of the companies classifying themselves as a small or medium-sized enterprise (SME). These businesses operate within manufacturing, wholesale and retail, administrative services and automotive repair sectors, respectively.
Respondents were questioned about the extent of their trade networks, where they are buying from and selling to, with the chart below illustrating average responses to the latter based on the percentage of customers in a number of broad geographical categories.
